Replenishment of the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” funds

13.01.2026

Recently, the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” received a unique exhibit. This is a marriage certificate from the second half of the 19th century, which was transferred by Pavlo Meir Bolyasny through Reuven Milman, the rabbi of the central synagogue “Golden Rose”. We would like to emphasize that this is not the first time that the esteemed rabbi Reuven has transferred rare and interesting exhibits to the Museum. Thus, in November 2015, the chuppah of the Dolyar family from the former Mogilev-Podilskyi ghetto was transferred to the Museum.

The document provided is a standard printed form with spaces for entering certain information. From it we learn that the marriage was concluded between members of the Jewish community of New Orleans (USA, Louisiana) on September 14, 1886 (14th day of the month of Elul 5646).

Mr. Pavlo said that the certificate was found in antique furniture purchased in Texas. It is not known for certain how the document got from New Orleans to another state. Most likely, the couple had to move.

Soon the exhibit will take its rightful place in the museum's exhibition dedicated to rituals and holidays.

The museum expresses its immense gratitude for such a valuable gift!
