On August 30 at 3:00 PM, the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” will host the opening of the photo exhibition “UKRAINIAN SHTETL. RETURN TO PLACES OF POWER” with the assistance of the United Jewish Community of Ukraine.

The photo project of Professor of the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts Yevgeny Kotlyar presents the viewer with a collection of artistic photographs taken by the author from 2002 to 2024 during his travels through the former Jewish towns of Ukraine. The author discovers the ancient and dilapidated world of shtetls (from Yiddish – town), with which the centuries-old history of the Jews of Ukraine before the Holocaust was connected. In this project, Yevgeny Kotlyar explores the meaning of places where Jewish life used to flourish. The author seeks to convey the feeling of the still familiar world of shtetls through the stylization of black and white photographs – peculiar poetic collages in spirit, which combine history, memories, nostalgia and the present.

The exhibition was created with the financial support of the Jewish Cultural Center "Beit Dan" (Kharkiv) with the assistance of the Center for Jewish Studies of Fordham University in New York, the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts, the Eastern Regional Scientific and Artistic Center of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Association of Judaica.
