On August 24, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Act of Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine. At the suggestion of Vyacheslav Chornovol, a blue-yellow flag was brought into the session hall, and a large rally was held in support of this event on the square in front of the Rada. People rejoiced, understanding the importance of the moment, and sang.
Interesting fact: the draft of the Act on the Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine was written by L. Lukyanenko and L. Sandulyakov in a school notebook in an hour and a half on the morning of August 23, 1991, and the definition “act” was chosen for the document, since the word “law” seemed too mundane.
From this day, August 24, 1991, the countdown of the years of independence of our country begins. On August 24, 1994, the first military parade dedicated to the Day of the Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine took place on Khreshchatyk Street in Kyiv. The act of declaring the independence of Ukraine crowned the millennial aspiration of the people of Ukraine – to have their own sovereign state and independently determine their destiny. Today, our country has all the attributes of statehood: a coat of arms, a flag and an anthem. And on August 24 of this year, Ukraine will celebrate its 35th birthday.
Independence Day of Ukraine is a holiday to which our state has overcome a long and difficult path. And after the adoption of the Act of Independence in 1991, the enemy is making attempts to subjugate Ukraine. In 2022, the Russian Federation committed full-scale military aggression against the Ukrainian state. This bloody war is still going on. So today, as always, we must unite the efforts of all various political and religious movements, all peoples living in Ukraine, to defeat the aggressor. And it is on this day that we will celebrate and rejoice that free Ukraine lives.
