THIS DAY – August 4 – Raoul Wallenberg’s Birthday

04.08.2020

Raoul Gustav Wallenberg, the Righteous Among the Nations, was born in Stockholm on August 4, 1912. He was a Swedish diplomat, who rescued the lives of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust.

In July 1944, Wallenberg was appointed First Secretary of the Swedish Diplomatic Mission in Budapest. Thankfully to him a lot of Jews received “Jewish passports”, which gave to their holders the status of Swedish citizens awaiting repatriation. Despite the huge number of survivors and witnesses, worldwide honor and recognition, his fate after January 1945 still remains a mystery.

We offer you to watch an online lecture by Dilfuza Hlushenko, researcher of the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” on “Raoul Wallenberg. The lost hero".
